what's up with that...

To steal Mauri's re-occurring title of 'what's up with that' I have to ask the question of...

What's up with asparagus making your pee smell so funky?

Since Mauri is on the farm with her family I was left to fend this Easter by myself. I went over to Lobby (surprise, surprise) and had brunch at the bar by myself. I actually enjoyed it. I watched lots of families with kids meeting in the lobby before having pictures taken or sitting down together to eat. It was kind like me speaking to schools. It is fun for an hour or two, but if I was a teacher I would be fired in 3 minutes for beating a kid! I got to enjoy the moments without knowing all the family drama.

Anyway, I enjoyed the Eggs Benedict with crabmeat. Yum!! The side was asparagus... also yum! My question is why does asparagus do that to you and other foods do not? Bananas, no. Peanut butter, no. Chicken, no. Even brussel sprouts, no! Well, I did a little checking and thanks to Google I found this story on MSNBC...

WHY DOES YOUR PEE SMELL WHEN YOU EAT ASPARAGUS?
Asparagus contains a sulfur compound called mercaptan. It is also found in onions, garlic, rotten eggs, and in the secretions of skunks. The signature smell occurs when this substance is broken down in your digestive system. Not all people have the gene for the enzyme that breaks down mercaptan, so some of you can eat all the asparagus you want without stinking up the place. One study published in the British Journal of Clinical Pharmacology found that only 46 percent of British people tested produced the odor while 100 percent of French people tested did. Great... apparently I have something in common with the French and Pepe Le Pew!!!

Anyway, now that you are disgusted you understand why Mauri can not leave me alone without me getting bored and posting dumb stuff! :-)

Happy Easter!
